Another Fastnet Rock Star: Sambro

Dec 03, 2018

Gelding might be the making of talented three year-old Sambro (3g Fastnet Rock x Eau de Joie, by Encosta de Lago) , who finally delivered an overdue stakes victory when taking out the $200,000 Group III Hawkesbury Guineas on Saturday.

Prepared by Chris Waller, Sambro broke his maiden in good style in May last year but had been winless since then despite placing several in Black Type events.

Often tricky in the gates, Sambro had the use of a barrier blindfold that allowed him to start on terms and he surged clear at the finish to win the 1400 metre contest by a long neck.

Stable representative Charlie Duckworth was relieved gear changes finally seem to have calmed Sambro in the stalls.

“He’s got no malice in him, he’s just playing because he was just a child. He’d put a foot up in the barriers and get scratched,” he said.

“He’s finally come of age and worked it all out. His barrier manners have improved enormously now he’s got the right head gear on.

“He would have won a lot more than two by now if that had been the case a year ago.”

Sambro was a $420,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Baramul Stud draft for Chris Waller Racing and runs for a syndicate of stable clients. His overall record reads two wins and seven placings from 15 starts with prizemoney topping $256,000.

He is the third winner from stakes-placed Encosta de Lago mare Eau de Joie, a half-sister to Golden Slipper winner Polar Success.

Sambro is the 136th stakes-winner for champion sire Fastnet Rock.

The rise of champion sire Fastnet Rock as a sire of sires has been clearly illustrated by his brilliant sons Hinchinbrook, Foxwedge, Smart Missile and now Your Song, so Neville Murdoch of Larneuk Stud is more than hopeful he has the horse to write the next chapter of success for this emerging sire dynasty.

Since 2015, sons of Fastnet Rock have had a growing influence on our racing with Hinchinbrook the Champion Australian First Season Sire for 2014/2015, while another Fastnet Rock son Rothesay was the Leading First Season Sire by winners.

Smart Missile was the Champion Australian First Season Sire for 2015/2016, while his Group I winning rival Foxwedge has overtaken him this year to be Champion Australian Second Season Sire for 2016/2017.

Hinchinbrook has powered onwards and upwards and was the Champion Australian Third Season Sire for 2016/2107, while Your Song represents the next wave of success having finished as the leading Australian First Season Sire by winners for 2016/2017.

Hinchinbrook, Foxwedge, Smart Missile, Your Song and Rothesay have all left stakes-winners as have other Fastnet Rock sons such as Wanted, Highly Recommended and Stryker, the sire of Group I New Zealand Derby winner Rangipo.

Eight stakes producing sire sons would suggest Fastnet Rock is going to leave a lasting legacy and Neville Murdoch sees blue sky ahead for his well credentialed candidate Cluster.

Larneuk Stud’s Neville Murdoch has always been impressed by the pedigree of resident stallionCluster and was delighted to see the success of his sire Fastnet Rock and the strong market for his sons progeny at recent sales.

A stunning winner of the Gr.2 Theo Marks Stakes, Cluster was a horse of outstanding ability and Murdoch is delighted with the quality of his first crop of weanlings – four of whom he is taking to this weekend’s Inglis Great Southern Sale at Oaklands Junction.

“He is really stamping his progeny with his own refined quality,” Murdoch said, noting that Cluster is a lovely mix of his champion sire Fastnet Rock and his prolific dam sire Last Tycoon.

“He has his sire’s strength and imposing presence coupled with that Last Tycoon quality.”
